Amanresorts recommends travellers combine stays at both Amangalla in Galle and Amanwella near Tangalle. Amangalla, approximately 100km south of Colombo, is the ideal starting point and provides the opportunity to explore the historic Galle Fort as well as the scenic and cultural attractions of the region. From Amangalla, it is a two-hour drive east to the beach resort of Amanwella. Here, the setting is tranquil with an abundance of swimming and sun bathing as well as opportunities to visit wildlife parks and local temples, monasteries and pilgrimage sites.
Location
Amanwella is situated amidst a mature coconut grove fronting a crescent-shaped beach close to the small port of Tangalle in southern Sri Lanka. The resort derives its name by combining the words, aman, or peace in Sanskrit, and wella, the Sinhalese name for beach. Amanwella is a two-hour drive from Amangalla in Galle, and a six-hour car journey or a 65-minute helicopter flight from Colombo. Amanwella is the perfect Beach House for the pleasures of not doing much at all. However, for visitors who can rouse themselves from the sybaritic pleasures of the south coast’s increasingly renowned “good life” there are a wealth of experiences offering the best of Sri Lanka’s natural diversity, folk tradition and ancient southern history.
Getting There
Colombo’s Bandaranaike Intenational Airport (BIA) is the sole international airport in Sri Lanka and is located about 30km north of the city. Travel time between the airport and the city centre varies between ¾ hour and one hour. All flights arrive into Colombo's Bandaranaike International Airport in the daytime.
By road from Colombo during the day, the drive to Amanwella takes approximately 6 hours on the southern coastal route. The road winds its way down the picturesque coast and is for the most part a single-carriageway. The car transfer from BIA/Colombo to Amanwella is US$235++ per car per trip.
Amanresorts recommends guests first commence their journey in Sri Lanka with a stay at Amangalla, transferring directly there on arrival which is a four hour drive. Cost of the car transfer is US$175++ per car per trip.
Car transfers between Amanwella and Amangalla are US$50++ per car per way and takes about two hours.
For arrivals at Amangalla or Amanwella after midnight, we will pre-register your reservation for the night before to ensure that your room is ready for immediate check-in.
Deccan Aviation's helicopter flight from BIA to Galle takes one hour and costs US$2,300 nett, while the flight from BIA to Tangalle is 1¼ hours at a cost of US$2,875 nett. The helicopter takes a maximum of four passengers with a baggage allowance of 15 kg per person.
Airport assistance
Guests will be met by an Amanresorts representative upon clearance through customs and escorted to a vehicle for transfer to Amanwella.
For departures, guests will be met by Amanresorts’ airport representative upon arrival at BIA’s departure area. The Amanresorts’ representative will organise a trolley and porter, and take care of all porter charges.
Accomodation
All 30 suites are air-conditioned and identical in layout and design and fall into two categories based on their location and views. They are contemporary in design yet blend local materials and styles like the distinctive terracotta roof tiles and hand-hewn stone walls.
Situated mostly on the hillside, the Suites enjoy varying views of the coconut grove and ocean. Floor-to-ceiling glass and latticed panels form two sides of the dwelling, one opening onto a private walled-in entry courtyard and plunge pool, with the terrace side opposite affording open views. The plunge pool measures six by four metres and the courtyard features a banquette for lounging and dining. Timber sliding doors and panels reveal the interior spaces. There is a combined sleeping and living room with a king-size bed, writing desk, armchair with footstool and a credenza featuring a personal bar with refreshments. Sliding screens divide this area from the open-plan bathroom featuring a free-standing bathtub, twin vanities, dressing area, shower and toilet. Terrazzo floors are finished in muted, sandy tones that reflect the beach setting. Three sets of suites share a connecting door on the terrace and are ideal for families or couples travelling together. Ocean Suites are situated on the lower levels of the hill and enjoy uninterrupted views of the coconut grove and beach. They are identical in design and furnishings to the Suites and are only differentiated by their location. Most are free-standing, although four sets of Ocean Suites share an outdoor connecting door on the terrace.

Inside the restaurant, doors open onto an internal grassed courtyard landscaped with frangipani trees and reflecting pools. The cuisine is Asian and Mediterranean with an emphasis on local seafood from the Indian Ocean. Adjacent to the Restaurant is the Lounge and Bar, which also enjoys panoramic views. Here drinks and snacks are served along with exotic sundowners. A selection of cigars is also available. The Pool Terrace adjacent to the swimming pool is ideal for alfresco dining. During the day, simple lunches as well as fresh young coconuts and local fruit are served. In the evening guests can dine on antipasti and homestyle dishes while relaxing on the daybeds and bolsters. Close to the beach front amidst coconut trees and away from the main building, the Beach Club provides an alternative venue for lunch and private dinners. THE BEACH

During the winter months guests can enjoy swimming, while snorkelling is possible along the southern headland, usually protected from the ocean swell during the dry season. Complimentary snorkelling equipment is available. VILLAGE NATURE WALKS
In the early morning or an evening stroll along the village paths that wind through the jungle provides an interesting insight into daily village life. Amanwella is situated in the heart of Wella Wathuara village. Chances abound to also view the diverse plants and wildlife in the area including monkeys, migratory birds, monitor lizards, hare and mongoose.
NATIONAL PARKS
Provide an abundance of opportunities to see wildlife in its original habitat around Amanwella. Bundala National Park is 1¼ hours east of Tangalle. This area of open scrub around the coast offers great opportunities for birdwatching (with around 150 reported species) and the occasional sighting of elephants and crocodiles. The salt pans attract a vast number of migratory shore birds, making this 6,216 hectare park one of the most important wetlands in Sri Lanka. The best time to visit Bundala is between November and March when the winter migratory birds arrive. Numerous grey langur monkeys populate the larger trees and in the scrub jungle you may also come across jackals, hares and spotted deer.
