Food & Beverage Facilities
Vatulele Island Resort is recognized for providing guests the opportunity to experience the best food and beverage in the region. It offers outstanding Pacific Rim cuisine with an emphasis on using ingredients of the freshest and highest quality. Many dishes include fresh seafood from the Fijian waters and ingredients grown in the resort’s own organic garden. Additionally a selection of ingredients is also flown in from Australia and New Zealand.
In the welcoming warm weather, dining is on the terrace of the large central pavilion overlooking the lagoon. The dining experience is typically individual however on special evenings there is an option to join a table
hosted by the management, set in the style of a Captain’s table on a ship. There are many options for private dining in your own bure, in ‘The Folly’ or on the beach set beneath the stars and lit with lanterns and candlelight. At full moon, the ‘dining room’ is usually set by the water’s edge. Our extensive wine cellar offers an outstanding selection of wines to compliment the delicious cuisine and stunning settings.
Private Dinners
It is possible to organise private meals for two in a number of locations on Vatulele. Guests may choose from such locations as the wine cellar, on the beach, the terrace of their bure and the folly overlooking the resort. It is advised that the guest books these private dinners in advance with the Food & Beverage Department as the resort is only able to accept one couple at a time in some of these locations.
Guest Services & Facilities
Wedding
A Vatulele wedding is where the fantasy of a lifetime comes true! For many career-minded couples, organizing a wedding takes an enormous effort that the idea of ‘eloping’ can become extremely attractive, especially when the wedding can take place in the serene romantic setting of Vatulele Island Resort.
The service is often held on the private beach at sunset, in a ‘church’ with doors and windows created from plaited coconut leaves and flowers. Occasionally, traditionally dressed Fijian warriors accompany the bride on a tranquil barge trip across the lagoon whilst the bride is carried ashore to take her vows. The ceremony is accompanied by the charming voices of a village choir raised in sublime harmony.
Wedding ceremonies at Vatulele Island Resort are not merely a show. The vows are solemnized by a Fijian minister, and as a result of their popularity, weddings are limited to only a few per month. Each wedding is tailored according to the guest’s requirements, with romantic and traditional options including traditional Kava ceremony and dancing to a vast selection of romantic dinner locations.
Diving
The quality of scuba diving sites at Vatulele has been one of the South Pacific’s well-kept secrets for many years. Vatulele is the only five-star island resort with a PADI Golden Palm dive facility, complete with two
resident dive instructors. The island is surrounded by deep water and offers twenty-two dive sites within fifteen minutes motor boat ride. It is one of the premier dive destinations in the region, offering daily certified
courses within a cross section of diving environments.
Snorkelling
While you are free to snorkel at your own leisure in and around the resort, we recommend most visitors to join the activities team for a snorkelling trip to the reef by boat. This is actually located some distance from the shore however the boat will moor on the deep side allowing you to see the varying types of marine life as the coral wall descends. Take your towel and plenty of sunscreen. Snorkels, masks and fins are available upon request from the activities bure located on the main beach.
Recreation Activities
The Legendary Red Prawns
This involves a short boat trip and pleasant fifteen minute walk along the base of our sandstone cliffs, through tropical rainforest until arriving at the tidal rock pools which house Vatulele’s sacred red prawns. Along the way you will be able to view ancient petroglyphs, one of which our logo is based upon. The legend surrounding the red prawns is well described in the information folder in your bure. You will need to wear shoes (preferably reef walkers) and insect repellent at certain times of the year.
Cave Walk
This hike takes about 30 minutes in each direction. Along the way you will be informed of the local Fijian bush medicine and see small plantations of young mulberry trees used to make tapa cloth. There are two caves, one of which contains a crystal clear pool of water, deep enough for swimming and allowing enough daylight in to see the multitude of stalegtites overhead. You will need sturdy walking shoes, your swimming costume, towel and insect repellent at certain times of the year.
Lighthouse Walk
More of a good walk than a hike, this trip takes approximately 25 minutes through the rainforest. The path is rocky and uneven in some places, so good walking shoes are required. Vatulele does not recommend climbing the lighthouse. However the view from the top is spectacular.
Village Trip
Our bus will take you to one of four of Vatulele’s resident native villages, where you will meet the chief of the island, who will welcome the guests with the official Fijian Kava ceremony. After a brief wander through the village, you will have the opportunity to buy local jewellery, handicrafts and tapa cloth made by the villagers themselves. We recommend that you take small denomination of Fijian currency ($5, $10 or $20) and a camera. The resort asks that guests dress somewhat conservatively; long skirts or shorts, plus covered shoulders. At some times of the year, guests like to watch a local football game called rugby.
Spa Therapies
We have a Fijian therapist offering massage at an additional charge. Price available on application.
